What it is about
For Macarena Larraín, running has never been only about reaching the finish line. On 30 August, she will run the 7K at the 2026 Itaú Santiago Half Marathon, another race on a sporting road that changed after she had a stroke in 2019.
Her last race was the 10K at this year’s Santiago Marathon. But for about a year now, Macarena has been taking on a new challenge: training for para athletics, the discipline she decided to commit to in 2024.
«Going from long distance to the 200 and 400 metres is practically changing sport,» she says. Athletics has become a fundamental part of her process since the stroke.
Sunday’s 7K will be a new experience on that road. A chance to meet competition again, but also to show that after a stroke the story does not necessarily end: it can change shape and open new paths.
Through her experience, Macarena also wants to put forward a message that can make a difference: recognising the signs of a stroke in time and acting fast can save a life.
